Foster's Oil Can

The Foster brothers, William and Ralph, created Foster's to be served cold back in 1887. They were so dedicated that they even sold their brew with ice so that it could be enjoyed the way it was meant to be in the harsh Australian climate. After more than 120 years, Foster's is available in over 150 countries, thus making it the largest selling Australian beer in the world.

In 1972, by a partnership between Foster's Australia and Miller Brewing Company, the 25.4oz Foster's Can arrived in the US. The steel can looked so much like an oil can, Americans gave it the nickname Foster's Oil Can, the name has stuck with it for more than 30 years.



Now, with this partnership, the Foster's you drink here in the US is actually brewed right here in the States under tight supervision of Foster's Australia. Only a few breweries in the world are entrusted with the recipe. Foster's is brewed to the same strict quality standards as in Australia and uses the original, exclusive Foster's yeast and "Pride of Ringwood" hops. These hops are grown in Australia especially and only for Foster's beer.

According to their website, Foster's has a bright, golden color and a creamy foam head and has a crisp, bold flavor and "clean hops finish as it washes over your taste buds." We'll see about now, won't we?

My past experience with Foster's was over ten years ago. I was slim on money and the bar had $1 Foster's drafts. Naturally, I bought the Foster's. I wasn't impressed, as I remember, but you do what you have to do when money is tight. What I especially remember is the horrible gas pains I had the next day!! So, we'll see what happens this time.

A side note here, I met an Australian once and asked him, "How can you drink that stuff?" He laughed and said, "We don't, that's kangaroo p*ss!" I then asked him what they drink there and he replied, "American beers, like Budweiser and Miller." HA!

And so here's my review: It's a European-style malt lager, with 5%ABV. Sold in 25.4 Oil Cans, 12oz bottles, 12oz cans and draft.

Not much of an aroma from what I can tell, a grainy smell? It has a golden color, meh, same as some cheap beers. There's very few carbonation bubbles that come up from the bottom of the glass and not much lacing that stays on the sides of the glass.



A definite creamy, bitter aftertaste. It leaves you smacking your tongue.

While drinking this crap, it was bitter and watery and not a crisp, clean taste, like the Foster's claim. Yep, it still sucks! Crisp, bold flavor my arse!

"G'day, mate! Have some p*ss in a can and we'll put another shrimp on the barbie for ya!"

Only two GOOD things have come from Australia, Hugh Jackman(Wolverine) and where they filmed LOTR, opps.... That was New Zealand!
